Sustainability is a matter of teamwork. There could be no better proof of this than the 2022 Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Report of Mohawk Industries, the fourteenth edition, published during New York Climate Week. The front cover is dominated by ‘Curiosa Meravigliosa’, the mosaic of large porcelain stoneware slabs designed by Joan Fontcuberta and created by Marazzi Group with the City of Reggio Emilia, a public artwork comprising more than 12 thousand photographic portraits which make up a single large image, that of a peacock, symbol of wisdom, curiosity and beauty. The installation provides a perfect analogy for the operations and projects of the individual Mohawk Industries companies, which all work with a shared aim: to build a better future for customers, people and the planet.

Connections that Create Value’ is the title of the 2022 Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Report of Mohawk Industries, the fourteenth edition, published to coincide with New York Climate Week. Drawn up in compliance with the universal standards of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the report documents all the group companies’ commitment to operating together in an environmentally and socially sustainable way to improve the spaces in which we live and work.

The emblematic image chosen for the report’s cover is that of ‘Curiosa Meravigliosa’, the permanent artwork by Spanish photographer, teacher, essayist and writer Joan Fontcuberta, created in a joint project by the City of Reggio Emilia and Marazzi Group for the City’s Palazzo dei Musei. The installation is a photographic mosaic of porcelain stoneware slabs, 16 metres high and 6 wide, comprising 12,000 photographs sent in by city residents. Every single photograph underlines the concept of the individual contribution, while the larger mural conveys a sense of community and of joining forces to create a collective work. Curiosa Meravigliosa provides a perfect analogy for the operations and projects of the individual Mohawk companies, which all work with a shared aim: to build a better future for customers, people and the planet.

Marazzi Group has actively contributed, with technological innovations, projects and awards, to the writing of the 2022 ESG Report and the results achieved, which have won Mohawk major awards.

In 2022 Marazzi Group was one of the first companies in the world to receive certification under ISO 17889-1, the first standard to assess the environmental, economic and social impact of ceramic tiles throughout their life cycle, on the basis of 38 measurement parameters. In the same year, it obtained ISO 50001 certification for its Energy Management System, thanks to its intelligent, responsible use of energy with the aid of targeted activities such as continuous monitoring of consumption and constant improvements and efficiency upgrades to its production plants.

Marazzi Group’s ultimate sustainability goal is summed up by a single figure: 100%. Thanks to the technologies it has developed, 100% of greenware and fired waste is recycled throughout the production process. A meticulous management process enables Marazzi to recycle 120% of process water, through the reuse of water from other companies in the district. The boxes and packaging in which the Group’s products are delivered to more than 140 countries worldwide every day are also 100% recyclable.

Top Employers certification, obtained for the 7th consecutive year in 2022, bears witness to the company’s commitment to quality of life, safety and value creation for its employees and local communities. Group employees received 8,000 hours of training, more than 3,800 of these on the environment and safety, and enjoy access to a Corporate Wellbeing plan that provides favourable terms with almost 50 organisation, from insurance to banking services, from gyms to individual wellness plans, and from education to health care.

In 2022 the company also received the Best Company Artribune Award for its active partnership with and support for institutions, cultural bodies and no-profit organisations working locally. Key projects include the creation of Curiosa Meravigliosa with the City of Reggio Emilia and artist Joan Fontcuberta and the donations that enabled the Sassuolo and Baggiovara (Modena) hospitals to acquire latest-generation equipment for home treatment and diagnostics.

Its commitment to reducing its climate footprint, which it shares with all its group member companies, has earned Mohawk Industries – the world’s largest flooring manufacturer, with almost 41,000 employees, manufacturing operations in 19 countries and sales in 170 – the title of America’s Climate Leader for the second consecutive year, and of Sustainable Brand Leader 2023. The climate leadership ranking is published every year by USA Today, one of the biggest American newspapers, in partnership with Statista, a portal of global importance for the preparation of rankings on environmental topics. Green Builder Media, a publisher specialising in eco-sustainable building materials, is the producer of the Sustainable Brand Index, which classified Mohawk as one of the top environment-friendly brands in the view of both consumers and professionals.
