The Edge Family Home

Kalamaria, Greece

Harmony and wellbeing are the keywords of this home by the sea, overlooking the beach at Thessaloniki. ‘The Edge Family Home’ is an apartment of 200 square metres in which The Top Marble Look porcelain stoneware slabs in Raffaello version, used for the kitchen countertop and to clad the fireplace in the lounge, and walnut wood lacquered in pale grey for the furniture, combined with monochrome textiles, are the perfect answer to the requirements of a client who requested a family ambience with no daring design statements, intended for relaxation and easy-going socialisation.

The city of Thessaloniki is ancient yet very contemporary. Its historic monuments include reminders of Ottoman rule and the Jewish community, as well as many works of Byzantine and Early Christian architecture, which have earned it UNESCO heritage status.

It was in this context that local firm TAKA+PARTNERS set to work to restyle ‘The Edge Family Home’, an apartment of two hundred square metres in a building that stands on the seafront of the Greek city.

To meet the new residents’ needs, the interior layout was reorganised into private and shared zones, with a special emphasis on creating the image of a family home. The spaces were subdivided into a single living area with two lounges and a kitchen, three bedrooms, bathrooms and storerooms.

The central feature is the entrance hall overlooking the sea, onto which all the other rooms in the apartment open to share the view. The single sleeping area has views of two beaches, Kalamaria and Thessaloniki.

The custom-designed furniture and boiserie panels give unity to the interiors, with beautifully judged proportions and finely styled details.
“This home is flooded with natural daylight,” the firm’s founder Aspasia Taka explains, “and for the kitchen countertop and fireplace cladding we chose The Top Marble Look series in Raffaello version, a delicate shade with a texture which evokes the exquisite patterning of marble. In this home by the sea, the uniform colour scheme and diversified lighting scenarios provide astonishing variety in the experience of space and an amazing combination of harmony and wellbeing. The Marazzi slabs were chosen because we considered them the ideal aesthetic match for the project. We also wanted outstanding quality and strength, as well as an immaculate appearance.”

Worktops, backsplashes, tables and wall coverings. But also surfaces for bathrooms and an ever-expanding world of solutions for tailor-made furniture elements in residential and commercial interior and outdoor design projects. The Top, an ultra-durable, stain-resistant and mould-resistant range of large ceramic slabs, confirms its intrinsic combination of unbeatable hygiene and safety and an ever-widening choice of aesthetic solutions that dialogue with the extensive range of finishes in the catalogue.
